She just got done directing a commercial for the all-80's verson of Trivial Persuit. It was her first directing job. The commercial featured other 80's icons, but not Cyndi.

In addition to her album of old standards (2003), she has released an excellent live DVD and a new album. The 2005 release, "The Body Acoustic," features duets of old classics with the likes of Shaggy, Ani di Franco, Sarah McLachlan and Puffy AmiYumi (Japanese pop-star). It also has two new songs, one called "Above the Clouds" with Jeff Beck (definitely check it out), and another called "I'll Be Your River" with Vivian Green. The album only uses acoustic instruments, originally intended to keep overhead at a minimum to maximize what could be sent to charity.
She is still very active. Many of the songs featured on her new album have live performance videos. If you would like to see them, "The Body Acoustic" comes in a DualDisc edition (usually a dollar more) with the videos on the DVD side (and a few other bonuses). Someone else said it before, she still tours quite frequently. You can see her if you want, either live, on DVD ("Live...At Last"), or in her new videos. You can also pick up some amazingly diverse material now. The "Goonies" Theme is now available on a greatest hits album ("Essential Cyndi Lauper"), and be sure to consider 2005's very reasonably prices "Hey Now! Remixes & Rarities" which not only has both of her contributions to the "Tycoon" musical--"The World Is Stone" and "You Have To Learn To Live Alone"--but many extremely surprising remixes of her hits.
To wrap up, if you'd like to know what happened to her in the first place after "Sisters of Avalon" and her Christmas album--other than wanting to spend time with her son--you can "consider" checking out the "Shine" album. It was released in 2000, two years after the Christmas album, but due to issues with her label, Sony was not the publisher. It was slated for release here, but never made it. Only an EP is available (with 4 tracks). The 3 songs + 1 remix are good, but fall short of representing the full album (or justifying the price). If you REALLY want to hear it, you can get it imported from Japan (or let Amazon send you an imported copy), but it'll cost you around $40. "At Last," the album of torch songs and old standards, was her follow-up.
She never disappeared. The scarcity of her work has more to do with Sony's arcane management decisions.
