My car seems to have a vacuum problem. It is very sluggish when you push the gas. And when driving, it sometimes revs up for no apparent reason.

This will depend on the make and model of the car you're driving. Some cars are more prone to vacuum leaks because they have a plastic intake manifold. Your best bet is to take it to a competent mechanic. Must computer issues can't be resolved by just swapping parts

Volume air flow .. a MAF only measures a sample of the air and calculates the amount used.. a VAF actually measures the amount using a door gate.... VAF's are more common to old imports or import designs (like Ford had in the early 90s)

usually a air leak won't cause a rev up when driving and sluggishness only if the engine is already about to die from the air leak

you need a mechanic to see what's going on as I think your timing is playing tricks on you (like a timing belt about to bust)

MAF= Mass Air Flow
the amount of air going into the intake

VAF= Vacume something or another.

With the engine at idle, listen for a sucking noise. Probably a vacume hose you can't see or get to.

FORD?

Try disconecting the battery to clear the trouble codes and try it again. This can put the ECM in limp mode which makes your car run too rich and not perform well.
