Yes, Americans tend to be too materialistic (self-included). As one of the elite in terms of world wealth, we tend to think first of ourselves rather than others, which means buying up goods for our own use, instead of lending a helping hand to those in needs. It comes mainly from ignorance. This isn't 100% of Americans, but definitely fits the majority. The real question is how to change it, and if we could, would we if the circumstances meant having less for ourselves or valuing people more than material wealth?

Hmmm. One can't really generalise .. but the whole capitalism thing is oriented towards getting consumers to buy .. getting them to think they need stuff so that they have to get it?

I live in India and there's been a change towards that consumerism too after the IT boom. It's materialism yes, is it too materialistic, I don't know. I guess it varies from one person to another .. basically it's too materialistic if you're buying for the wrong reasons - like status, insecurity .. if you're looking for "things" to fill empty spaces inside.

Well that's what I think anyway.

I think Americans are the most materialistic persons on earth.

I dont know about the islamic people as I have not seen the muslim countries. You do not get visas to see islamic countries as tourists.

But Americans are unbelievable people. One has to travel to a third world country, and see the poor and then you have to come to America and see a poor american family.

Yes I would think so. Americans are very materialistic.
