It really depends on your favourite genre, as there were several that I really personally enjoyed. Here are a few of what I considered to be the best titles:

Destruction games - The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

The name says it all, and it's seriously the most destructive game I've ever played. There are even some buildings you can collapse. Very fun, very addictive, and HULK SMASH!!!

Car Games - Twisted Metal Black

*drools* Best Twisted Metal game ever! It has an incredible story and is insanely fun. Despite the age of the game, its replayability makes it easily one of the best titles on the PS2, especially for the multiplayer mode.

Superhero Adventure - Spiderman 2

I have put countless hours into that title, the adventure is fun, there's witty commentary throughout, the story is good, the responsiveness is great, there are an insane number of goals and missions to complete, and if the goals weren't enough, there's always the free-roam to-scale Manhattan Island, allowing you to live out your dream of free-falling from the top of the Empire State building, or playing all over the statue of liberty.

Fighting Games - Tekken 5

Comes with the first three games built into it, and the list of characters is wonderful, the story is awesome, and the various modes of play are unmatched by any other fighting game, including previous Tekken titles. I actually am going to re-purchase a PS2 just to get this title again.

Superhero RPG - X-Men Legends 2:Rise of Apocalypse

Good story, incredible play-length (as long as you want it to be), loads of characters and wonderful customization options.

Fantasy RPG - Final Fantasy X

An excellent addition to the FF saga, not as good as previous versions, but much MUCH better than many others. You'll have a blast and there's more to do than I could possibly list. Cut scenes are very sweet as well.

Fantasy/Adventure - Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

Much like the incredible "Symphony of the Night" but in 3D and even bigger! I personally LOVED SotN too much for it to be topped by any other Castlevania game, but Curse of Darkness is EASILY the next best. If you like Castlevania, or even if you just like fantasy/adventure, this is DEFINITELY the best title released to the PS2 for this genre.

Modern Action/Adventure: GTA 3: [Any]

All of the GTA 3 titles were incredible, giving you free-roam options of mischief and meyhem beyond any other game's capabilities to date. There's nothing more thrilling than stealing car after car after car, shooting up the inevitable horde of policemen, then trying to outrun them only to crash to a burning death when your car careens out of control, slides through ten pedestrians on the sidewalk, then slams into a tank.

There are too many games to nail down just one. FFX was the first of it's kind, beautiful graphics and real decent quality voice acting. POP is another first of it's kind. And Shadows of the Colossus can't be touched...well except by Iko (same people who made shadows).

I think all those games have the ability to be the best PS2 game just because they tried to break the mold in some way. That makes a game amazing.

But if that isn't good enough for you PSM will have it's yearly list of best games of all time soon enough!!!

I agree with you there on Shadow of the Colossus. Resident Evil 4 is a good game, if you like that type of game. Soul Calibur 3 is also a good game.
