You can flick them off into a can of hot soapy water. It's very satisfying, believe me. However, you will get better results if you use Sevin, a spray that will kill them. The best remedy I ever found was to use those spikes that contain insecticide every year. You pound them into the soil around your rose bushes and they keep all insects away for a full season. Home Depot used to sell them and I think Ortho makes them.

The BEST thing for Japanese beetles ... is called a "Bag a Bug". It has a scented sex lure that intoxicates the beetle, and then the beetle is so "drunk" it can't fly and it falls into a bag just below the lure. Every week you simply dump the bag, and no bugs within like 10 feet of the area.
I've used these. They are amazing. Kinda fun to watch too.

I've tried a couple of organic sprays--Pyola to kill them, and Neem-Away to repel them. Of course, if I can see the beetles and reach them well enough to spray them, I can probably just knock them into a can--but the Neem spray has lasting repellent effects, so it's my favorite.
I got the sprays from Gardens Alive, just type that into the web and you'll find them.
