well, there 3 kinds that i would rate as a personal best for kids 2+.

1)Marmosets(they are small, and chearfull and just the cutest little love macines you ever will lay your eyes on)

2)White faced Capuchin(they are the kind from george of the jungle, they are sweet and will grow up thinking your kids are their siblings)

*alot of these previous answers say not to get a monkey, this choice is up to you, they do get messy and throw pooh, but only if not trained or raised right. if trained and introduced right, they make lovely pets, and alot of states reguire a permit, but there are a few with no restrictions against monkeys like Virginia and Ohio, and more, please dont let the people here talk you out of doing something you want to do, it is your choice. make the decision without even thinking about these peoples answers, i think monkeys make great pets when trained/introduced/and cared for correctly, take my word for it, they are hard work at first, but it gets easier and more daily ritual as time goes by*

3)Kinkajou(they are so cute, if not trained right they will become biters, but when tought not to bite, they are sweet and very loving and protective of their family)*this is not the best choice for 2-4 year olds, but 5-6+ will do fine with one of these cuties*

None of them truly. Monkeys are considered to be an exotic pet. You should check with your state to see if you need any special permits or license to get them.

Unfortunately, many of the monkeys that are offered as "pets" are stolen from the wild away from their mothers. Why would you want to contribute to that?

Besides that there are quite a few illnesses/diseases that are transferable from human to monkey and vice-versa. It would be horrible if your cute monkey were to infect your family with some kind of illness (in all seriousness).

I often find that The Greater Narrow Nostrilled Chimp which has stubby fingers makes the ideal pet. But you're really better getting rid of the children and buying a new car.

I am not going to give you a long speech on how monkeys are never good pets, but wild animals and how irresponsible it would be to expose your child to a NHP(non human primate). Instead I am going to post this website and hope you check it out for yourself. Go to ARTICLES/INFO and TESTIMONIALS. Please do check out the powerpoint presentation on the web site as well.
Be forewarned though. Some of the images are graphic. They are real however and a picture is worth a thousand words.
There are better pets than monkeys, please RETHINK.
The site:

http://www.petmonkey.info/index.html

The site also has a part that will tell you if NHPs are legal in your part of the country, if you are within the US.

Most states ( I think all) do not allow the owning of exotic pets, unless you can provide for them a natural habitat that is correct in size and sutability. Besides that monkeys throw poop!

Not the best choice of pet. They are extremely dirty, with a temper to go with it. Had one never again. If kids want monkey go to zoo.

Wild animals are not that great with children. Monkeys have large teeth and can be very aggressive.
