usually, intention is aroused when someone attention was caught by the introduction of a new product or by existing potential product. about your idea or intention to copyright an invention, doesnt sounds good to me. (reasons), inventions does not come easy and decided overnight. products dont form by the flick of the finger. and copyrighting those produts or inventions does not make the creators happy. if you intend to acquire an invention and reproduce them I suggest YOU BUY THEM from the rightful owner. besides, doing so ensures that no pollutive rubbish and additional garbages won't be dumped everywhere like the chinese does. and if these norms aren't abused, quality product would be produced, quality people will be everywhere, quality of the education will be cheaper, more people will be able to afford the cost of everything and quality of our lives will follow...

To protect an original invention OR a significant improvement to an existing product, a patent would be filed. Here's the USPTO's definition: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/doc/general/index.html#patent

Copyrights can be obtained for things of an artistic nature. This includes, of course, poetry, films, sculptures, music, fiction, etc. But can also include things that may not necessarily seem "artistic" in the general sense of the word. Copyrights can also be obtained for advertising copy, games, software programs and blueprints, to name just a few.

NOLO is a great, free informational site. Also, be sure to read what else the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office) has to say about patents.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Patent It Yourself (11th Edition) by David Pressman
* Patents and How to Get One : A Practical Handbook by U.S. Department of Commerce
* How To Make Patent Drawings Yourself: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Jack Lo
* The Inventor's Notebook: A Patent It Yourself Companion by Fred E. Grissom

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Hi,
You do not copyright an invention, you patent an invention. You copyright something you write or draw. The first step in a copyright is to claim the copyright in writing within the boundaries of the text or picture. Say "Copyright 2006, by Your company Name". If it is a patent, you will need to apply for the patent. You can get the forms yourself, or have a Patent Attorney do that for you. You can to the US Patent and Trademark Office, link below.

It depends on what kind of invention it is. a copyright is the easiest thing to get quickly, then go for a patient. Sending the plans, or the idea to yourself might work, but doesn't mean you will have the right to patient the idea or thing.
