when these conditions are met:

senior license
job to pay for own insurance
some money to help parents purchase car
can pay for own maintenance
can pay own registration/inspection

I believe if a student wishes to commute to college, parents have an obligation to help pay for the transportation, but not the insurance. If a student chooses not to go to school but to live at home and work...then they must pay rent and the above but parents should help with the initial purchase.
