Im pretty mature and I make good grades. I also made the volleyball team so I will be traveling after school once a week if not more including practice every other day. My parents arent going to be able to make most of my games so they need to pick me up after the games and after practice. There is no telling how long my games are going to be. Im 13 should i have one i know how not to go over my minuites and my friends dont text a whole lot just a little and there are these plans where you get free minuites after 7:00 and my games should end any where from 7-8 and i would talk to my friends after that so i would get a lot of free minuites.
THANKS

My parents added me on their cell phone plan when I was thirteen (1996) because I had the same extracurricular commitments like you. Thus, your age is perfect to start only if you have those commitments. If you don't have these commitments than 16 is a good point. It purely depends on your situation. Most parents (I'm pretty sure yours are probably one of them) buys mobile phones for their daughters more often than their sons. Its not that they favor one gender over the other; its mainly a security "investment." And if your parents are very stubborn, you can make reference to the fact about the implications about being a young female (you have to do your homework on this like statistics on rape, abduction, etc.). Parents will jump to a buy a mobile phone. It may sound unethical but it actually works if implemented properly. Just remember if your parents buy you prepaid mobile phone instead of putting you on their contract. The best way to go is what your parents have (which saves them money, and parents love that!). If your parents got Cingular, go with CingularGo. If your parents got Nextel, go with Boost Mobile. Etc. Instead of asking to be put on their contract, opt for prepaid. But if you want to talk to friends for free, all prepaid have plans like contract. It's all up to your folks. Good luck, and I hope your parents grant your request.

Find out if there is any way for your parents to be at your games to support and encourage you and be available for a ride home. If that's impossible, check into trac phones, they are fairly inexpensive for a quick call. Your parents may have many other issues why a cell phone is not an option ( another monthly bill to pay; huge deposit required; etc) Good luck!

This is an additional expense for your parents. Can they afford it?

How about getting a pre-paid phone, that way you know exactly what you have to use. If it's truly for your parents to know when to pick you up, there are also phones that you can dial only a specified phone number. Do you really need to text your friends?

i would let you have one. i am thirteen too. and a star server on the volleyball team (answered another of your questions). i got mine when i was twelve because i had to walk to school and back for volleyball until school started, and then got rides home. had to walk from my four or five academic activities, and from softball. but you sound mature (except for this whining complaint) and like you deserve to get one. but your parents also deserve the right to say what you get and what is taken from you, remember that

If you were my kid, I'd get you one of those 3 number deals that only calls me and grandma. That would be great.. Then you could get a jobey job when you turned 14 and see how expensive they are.
