Thought for the day: you know you're getting older when someone is telling you about their operation and you are interested in the details.

The first time I was called ma'am. When I started getting grey hair. When I realized I would never "get" rap music. When I started paying my first mortgage. When I was working in a high school and realized that I was old enough to be those kids' mother. When teenagers talk about the 80s like we used to talk about the 60s. God, this is getting depressing!!

When I started carrying my pillow everywhere we went because no one else had a decent one to sleep on!

When wearing makeup became more of a chore than just to let my natural look be who I am - what was a 15 minute process was beginning to take too much time and I was always late - I just didn't think it was more than 15 minutes of my time and then I saw a picture of myself with and without = I looked younger without - it didn't emphasize my wrinkles if I didn't have on foundation, etc. Saved me enough money to afford my prescriptions for the glasses I was needing!

When I realized to wear what was in fashion, was a little more revealing than what my body ought to reveal.

When turning 40 no longer seemed like it was the issue - it was the effects of being 40 that had become the issue!

I realized I was getting older when I started running one day and my flabby skin took a minute to catch up. I'm an author, have you ever noticed that most author's photograph
on the back of their book has them posed with their hand under their chin??? It's to hold their chin up! That's a sure sign of aging.
The other day I was having a conversation with my employees, most are in their early twenties. We were talking about hair color and how some people were meant to be brunettes. I brought up Sophia Loren, they did not know who she was. Next I brought up Delta Burke, they did not know her either. That really made me feel old.
Being on this site can make me feel old. I do not understand half the questions asked because they are abbreviated in ways I have never seen abbreviation used before. Pretty soon I won't be able to understand half of what our youth is saying. Here are some examples.
1) If your Phat (fat) it's a compliment! In my day you would get slapped for calling someone that.
2) Hey Dog! In my day you would have gotten slapped for calling someone a dog.
3) Your my *********! This is a good thing now!
EVERY THING IS THE OPPOSITE! I'm so confused...hey isn't that a sign of getting older?

When I started to make this little 'oomph' sound when getting up from a chair. When I realized I couldn't sit on the floot cross-legged anymore because I couldn't get up without help. When my kids asked me what the world was like when it was 'black and white' after watching old Twilight Zone shows. Huge one was when my arms were no longer long enough to read! I fought that one for years because 'bifocals' meant OLD but then I had to fill out a claim form once at the airport when they lost my luggage and could not read the print no matter how far away I held it so I had to go outside and get my son who was waiting to pick me up to come in and read it to me. Crushing!

That's a toss-up between the gray hairs and being called "the old folks" or "experienced". It's a military thing....when you're young and new to the military, you look to the ones who've been in awhile. They help and you learn. Now, after 18 years, we have "kids" coming up to us going "excuse me, how do you...?" or "what's it like....?". We just look at each other and laugh. At 20, you don't think you'll become those people. I think another big thing for me is hearing myself tell our daughter the same things my parents told me. I always said "I'll never say that!". WOW!! Look who I've become!! HAHA

That's funny, I was just talking to a friend a couple of weeks ago about this. Here's how I know I'm getting older. I am starting to LOVE beet salad, I don't understand the young people's music or fashions (especially the footwear), I get tired very easily and when my friends and I get together, we talk about medical procedures and housing prices...and I'm only 37!!!

When I looked at other people my age and they looked really old ...I decided at that time to not get old,...only
older
I think younger and I dont down anyones music or refer to the good old days.I think teenagers and young people are interesting to talk to and I listen without being judgmental...I keep an active open mind..I dont try to dress like a kid but I also dont wear old frumpy clothing. I will give in gracefully to being older, but never to being "old"

Some years back, I saw a group of young women (20-somethings) talking in a park here in NYC. The first thought that popped into my head was: "Aw .. they're so cute!" I suddenly realized that I had transitioned into old-fartdom.

When I reached the age my sister was when I thought she was old. From that point on, people 5 to 10 years older than me suddenly stopped seeming so old.

I realized I was getting older when I started saying some of the same things that my parents said to me when I was young. Scary!
