...an unwanted critter, up in the ductwork going to her vents, underneath her house. I picked up a trap from the Humane Society, and we rigged it with tuna. Nothing. Then, her friend cut a hole in the ductwork, and he moved the trap. Still nothing. We think it's a possum. Any ideas?

To cover a few points made in replies...

When I say trap, I'm talking about a 2x3 cage...not anything that will fit up in the ductwork.

The Humane Society where I am does not do anything about animals that are in this situtation. If it was out in the yard, they would come and get it.

All Humane Society officers we asked, and one veterinarian, suggested using tuna, so we used tuna.

The trap came from The Humane Sociaty, thus...is a humane trap, causing no harm to any animal that might enter it, whether it be cat, or possum. We have no idea what the animal is...we're assuming it's a possum, because they are prevalent in this area.

And no...I have no intentions of killing an animal, just because it's an animal.

You sound determined not to kill it--smart idea. If you poison it, it might die somewhere you can't get to it, and then noise would turn into STiNK!

Tuna isn't smelly enough. Bait the trap with something like Garlic Flavored Chicken sausage. Or, as the other posters suggest, contact your local animal control office or the Humane Society and see if they can come out and help.

Peanut butter often attracts opossums as well as large rodents. If the animal doesn't enter the trap on its own, contact animal control and have it removed by somebody who has the experience and equipment to get it done right. Keep in mind that wild animals can be dangerous and carry disease.

What bait should I use for possum?
Dog or cat food, meat, or meat byproducts should not be used, because domestic cats are highly likely to be caught. Rather, apples, oatmeal cookies and peanut butter are more effective bait which minimizes the likelihood of catching domestic animals

Anything that the animal likes (food) put it in the vent with the trap.

The humane society or the local shelter should come out and help you for free!

Are you sure it's still there? If it is and you've moved the trap, try a different bait.
