As I suffer from a debilitating mental illness I'll tell you the biggest misconceptions are that my illness is contagious or that I am going to wig out and hurt someone. I suffer from a Schizo affective disorder and when I am on my medicine I am a perfectly normal and functional personal, but many people with disorders like mine feel that they become cured and stop taking their medicines or they stop taking their meds because of the side-effects (they are not pleasant). Then they have a relapse of symptoms, or (using the medical term) wig out. When they do that they make us all look bad. And if they commit a crime they should be prosecuted, they made a conscious decision to stop taking their meds. As far as people thinking that all mental illnesses are contagious, it is the way people act when they don't understand something. I feel that people need to be educated about mental illnesses. There is a commercial on TV with Martin Sheen that is a start, but a lot more needs to be done. I also hope this answer is what you are looking for and that it might educate someone.

There is no other way than to do public education. The various mental health association are trying but it costs a lot of money to do a major campaign. It is only in recent years where mental institutions have been closed and the mentally ill are out and around to be seen. There are many misconseptions about the different kinds of mental illness. Perhaps school could do some introduction to the subject in health classes.

I'm not sure what your asking. I think society does accept people with mental illness much more than it has in the past. In my short lifetime it has come a very very long way. When I was young they used to house these people in zoo's. Doctors have come up with better and better medicines to help treat mental illness. I think society has become more accepting towards depression, they used to call them "mental breakdowns" and give you electric shock therapy to fix you. Society maybe has a ways to go in your opinion but I think it has moved forward alot in my lifetime.

I wish I knew. Being one who has major depression, PTSD, and Anxiety disorders it would be nice for just one person to truly understand that I don't choose for these irrational moments to occur - they jump out and attack me - and even with medication, which is my responsibility to take and maintain and I do, they still impact me and if under great stress and can spill over into surrounding areas of my life. Even my husband does not understand. Unfortunately, it's one of those "have to have been there done that" experiences or people truly cannot relate to the devastating effects or the on-going battle we fight each and every day to do accomplish some of the simplest task.

It is great that you want to help the mentally ill people. you can donate to the organizations which help such people. you can visit such hospitals where they are treated and teach them what you know. you can befriend them as they are usually lonely. you really are doing good work

I really don't know. I think it's a natural reaction to be slightly frightened by them or to avoid them because they aren't "normal". I think the best we can do is try to make their lives as normal as possible.

We need to educate people more about it. More education more knowledge, and they won't be afraid of it anymore.
