His books had a good formula the underdog ,the villian and the underdog coming up a winner ,humour and main characters you just love right away.
The man was a genius my favourite book is The twits even thinking of the pictures of the twits in the book makes me laugh.

Roald Dahl was not a good writer. He had some great ideas, but his writing style is clunky and awkward. I would suggest studying him for a little bit then try to find your own style.
