Unopened oil will last until the dinosaurs come back and make new oil. If the seal has been broken, it can remain capped for a long, long time. The main problem with oil storage in small amounts is contamination from dust and humidity.

Yes motor oil has a shelf life. The basic oil may not but motor oil has additives, etc which do have a shelf life. I have read that 3 years is a good rule, maybe more if it has been stored very carefully. Besides the oil breaking down the are also forumla considerations, newer engines need new oil so you have to be careful what you use.

There is no shelf life but once the seal is gone must be used in 3 months.

I have a can of oil from 1908 and it still looks good but the shelf rotted away and collapsed.

All of my oil is really old. It's like from before the dinosaurs so like it must really be really old. Really.

Years and years....., the only real threat is additive separation.... (sets so long the additives settle to the bottom) just shake and use.....
