White-footed or deer mice, the common wild mice of much of the midwest, are "opportunistic omnivores," according to The Mammals of Illinois. That means they eat almost anything they can find, including seeds, insects and insect larvae, and leaves and other plant parts. Apples and carrots would not be available to most mice in their natural habitat, but I'm sure they would eat
them if they were available.

Food blocks can be bought at pet stores and wal-mart. They have been specially made to keep your mice healthy as well as help them trim their always growing teeth a little while eating. I feed my mice these and a treat from my dinner plate most nights. When I make put something in the toaster such as poptarts, waffles, etc, I usually break the non-frosted corners off and hand it to them. They tend to fight over them and steal from each other even if I give them all a piece at least one will drop theirs and go yank food from another mouse hands while it's eating, usually resulting in a quick fight.

Never ever let them lick syrup from your fingers. I let a few mice do this to me and now they nip at my hand every time I put it in the tank to pick up a mouse. They are still friendly, but this is not a welcome behavior. It makes it more difficult to hold mice when one of them randomly bites you. Most sites on mice say don't feed them sweet things anyway.

Mice like crackers, nuts, seeds, and lots of other things.

Supposedly you should not feed them peanuts. I read that online somewhere and can't remember why. Chocolate, cat food, more than a tiny amount of peanut butter is also bad because they can choke, and the rest isn't suited to their diet.

I have a mouse, and dont feed it cheese, they are lactose intolerent. Just feed it hamster food, and they love sunflower seeds. Also give him something to chew on, like wood. I have a mouse and he especially favors the sunflower seeds.
