Focus on similarities rather than differences. If you tend to run into this person at a healthclub..you know that you have at least that in common. If you meet at a certain store, or in a class...you know you have that, etc etc.

Keep the convo light...nothing too personal. Follow your intuition on what the limits of the convo can be...and focus on the commonalities at first

You can go up to the person some day and smile. Offer your hand for a handshake, and say, "Hello, I'm (say your name). What is your name?" (Then stop and think for a second, so you can try to remember their name for next time!) You can begin to make a comment about what you have in common, such as going to the same school or church, living in the same neighborhood, the weather, etc.

Pay attention to what they say about their life and interests, so you can show your interest in the person by talking about those topics next time you see them. Now and then, call the person by name during the conversation. For example, when I am talking with my friend Sue, I'll throw her name into the conversation now and then, even if she's the only one I'm talking to. It's not necessary, but it sounds friendly.

Start with hi, and let the conversation go from there. Talk about the day, their health etc.
