Actually, it's just staying up all night for some task when you weren't necessarily intending to do so. For instance, during final exams many college students pull "all-nighters" because they study all night in the hopes of cramming one last fact into their heads. A surgeon might pull an "all nighter" because of an emergency surgery that takes all night.

Example: Say your normal routine is to get up at 6:00am and be in bed at 10:30pm and this being done within a normal 24 hour period. Well an all-niter don't happen like that!
With an all-niter you won't see 10:30pm till the following day if your lucky.
To be on the safe side here let's just say more than 36 hours awake!

It's staying up all night with loads of caffeine to help that out usually to cram for an exam or final you have the next day. College and University students tend to pull off many of these in the course of a semester....
