Besides classes in medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology, it's really important that you have strong English skills (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, etc.). If you're lacking in this, a course in English Composition would be of great help. When doctors dictate, they don't use perfect grammar (just like we don't use perfect grammar in normal everyday speaking). So you have to be able to correct them for written reports, and sometimes "rewrite" what they say so that it actually makes sense.

If you don't already work in the medical profession, you can get a job in a doctor's office, doing some other type of job, while you're getting the training for medical transcription. That's what I did. Working in the doctor's office was helpful because I became familiar with some of the procedures and the language just by being in that environment every day.

Like one of the other answers above mine -- I can't imagine trying to be a medical transcriptionist without the proper training. There's SO much to know, and I don't know of any doctors or hospitals that would tolerate having their reports done by somebody with no medical knowledge. I wish you the very best of luck!!

You really will need some basic schooling, I can't imagine doing the job without. The very basics I would suggest are medical terminology (a must), anatomy and physiology I, and some type of intro to biology. I would even take a second year of A & P but those 3 would be the bear minimum I would suggest - and obviously have the typing skills to go along with job. To be a good transcriptionist you have to know if what you think you are hearing even makes sense and if you don't know your body systems and terminology you will have no way of knowing that.

Just have to keep looking. I live close to Victoria,Texas and I just read the paper and some company is hiring for that with no experience, entry level. Don't know where you live but if it's anywhere close to Vic check out the Victoria Advocate.
