The caret rating of gold can be converted to a percentage using the following formula where "C" = the caret rating:

C / 24 * 100%

So for instance 12 caret gold is 50% gold. The caret system is typically only used with jewelery and gold money. Industrial uses of gold use percentage to measure gold content.

There are a number of metals that can be alloyed with gold, any of which can be used to lower the caret level of gold. For jewelery purposes the common alloying agents are copper, silver, palladium, platinum and nickel.

The following discusses several alloys of gold from wikipedia:

"Gold readily forms alloys with many other metals. These alloys can be produced to increase the hardness or to create exotic colors. Adding copper yields a redder metal, iron blue, aluminum purple, platinum metals white, and natural bismuth together with silver alloys produce black. Native gold contains usually eight to ten per cent silver, but often much more — alloys with a silver content over 20% are called electrum. As the amount of silver increases, the color becomes whiter and the specific gravity becomes lower."
