Dicotyledons are seedlings that come up with two little leaves, and monocotyledons come up with one. I think lilies are monocots.

Dicotyledonous plants have seeds which are made up of two leaves within the seed, such as a peanut or a string bean (ya know, how you can split those seeds in half easily?). sprouts. Monocotyledonous plants appear at first with just one leaf, because there's just one seed-leaf -- such as corn, or many types of lawn grass. The seed is one part and you can't split it into two parts that will each grow into a leaf.

dicot and monocot refer to the way plants grow. Cut off the top of a monocot (like a bamboo shoot) and it stops growing. Cut off the top of a dicot (like a pepper plant) and it will shoot up from one of the sides and the new shoot will take over where the top was.
