I've always wanted to know this. I've never had an encounter with a deer, but my family members have because they live out in deer county, lol. Well, I was just wondering why don't the beasts just move out of the way instead of just standing there staring?

In addition to a result of fear from being startled, standing stock still also acts as a defense in the wild in the hopes that a carnivore will lose sight of the prey if it doesn't move. While it works well in the woods, it doesn't work so well on the highway...

They are in THEIR element and along comes a strange looking machine with humans sitting in it, staring and waiting for them to move. Why shouldn't the deer stare at this contraption; it's invaded his environment. And the deers are probably waiting for the car to go around them...duh. Whenever I came across deers or bears on my way home, I just waited for them to finish doing whatever it was that I'd interrupted. ("beasts" huh? just think what they consider your family members!)

The deeer freeze because it is a defensive instinct. In the wild if an animal astands still or appears to be dead a predator won't approach it. The same applies to the car. The deer percieves it as a predator and doesn't move to protect itself.

It is because of the headlights. When you shine lights on a deer they freeze. It is also an illegal way to hunt, kind of like poachiing is, but not the same type.

It's called "deer in the headlight look" They do that because they are scared stiff. I wouldn't exactly call them beasts. They are just like every other animal.

If you saw a ball of light barreling out of the sky and sensed no danger, I bet you and everyone would freeze and just stare at it.

Deer are obsessed with the game of chicken, and usually win. They are frozen by the lights, they do not see the impending death coming at them.

i'm not sure, but i think it's cuz they don't have very keen binocular vision like we do, that is, they don't really see things in front of them very well.. they are able to see things on the sides bettter.
so when they hear a car coming, they look in the general direction of the car, but since they can't see the car very well, they don't know how close it is or even what to do so they just freeze. i think.
( i hope i don't sound like a ding-dong).
