Show genuine concern for them.
Don't nag them or tell them how to do their job. Show them respect.
set a good example for them.
If you are the boss and on the phone or computer for personal use while they are busting thier as ses at work, they may not do their best work.
Bring in breakfast for them once in awhile--bagels, etc..
THANK them when they are going home.

Compensation is important, however, benefits are critical, especially health insurance.
Be friendly, not a friend.
Remember, "Those respect what others inspect".
If you have salable inventory, keep very close track of shortages.
If someone feels they are not getting what they think they deserve, they WILL steal from you.
Make your place of business comfortable, not cushy.
Never let your employees see you worry under any condition.
Support their good work as often as possible, tactfully correct any errors they make in a positive light.
And remember, there is always one that is never happy. One rotten apple will spoil the barrel. Cut those ASAP no matter how good they may be.
As a farmer once said,"What good is a cow that gives plenty of milk if she kicks over the pale".

I don't know what your company does, but, there was an article about companies allowing pets in work places. Study showed that people would take pay cut to go work for a company which allowed them to bring pets to the work place.

a good pay, thats the main thing they are there for. or if the pay is low, a friendly boss that people like to work with. at some situations, no matter how high the wage is, some people quit because they don't enjoy their job due to other co-workers or bosses.

Pay them well. Give them a stake in the company and a share of the profit. Promote and reward them on objective merit (forbid nepotism).

Pay them a fair wage. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be honest with them. If they are not performing, tell them If they are, tell them that too. Before you ever do or say anything, put yourself in their place. They are all humans, just like you. Same hopes and dreams.
