Well this is a plausible fear. A lot of small businesses do fail. But there are thousands that make it. I may be to offer some assistance. I would need some more info about your biz to do so. If you are interested to find out what I may be able to do for you contact me directly.
I protect and grow small business for a living...

That is a real hard thing to answer. First let me say that I admire anyone that tries. I started my own business 6 years ago and had the same fears. EVERYBODY who tries does.
There is only one secret (and it's not really a secret) for success. You need a product or a service that someone else will pay you for.
Then, you have to be able to supply that product or service at a price that allows you to make a profit.
This answer is way to general to be of any real help. I suggest you get any book you can find that relates to the business that you are contemplating. Read them. Remember that what ever they cost, they are an investment.
Go for it, and the best of luck to you.

You need two things to start;
1) Do something you like to do
2) Be the best at what you do
Without those two elements, your toast.
Have good CPA, form a S Corp, LLC, or PC, etc.
Have enough capitol to carry you through six months.
Have the support of your wife/ family.
Locate a mentor to see you through.
Be willing and prepared to work long hours at short pay for awhile.
Love what you do.
There are many more elements you will discover and concore after the above listed items are in the past.

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website. There is never a guarantee that you won't fail, regardless of what you do. The guarantees of failure comes, however, when you refuse to risk.
Start your own business - you're either succeed or you won't but whatever happens you will have risked, experienced and learned.

A good and hounest business plan and finacial advisor. Keep good books and never take from money from the till. Failing in a business is never a "Bad" failure, but good preparation for your next venture. Go "All-in" and don;t give up because if you really want it to work it will....good luck.
