There's 2 distinct solutions to your dilemma. Since you are not ruling out medicine, go for it!!! Get the degree....put in the hard work and get a feel for it. With a degree to fall back on in your back pocket, you can explore a lot more avenues with a positive attitude...'coz you've taken the" what if" out of the picture. Intersting things to study...what are your hobbies? Fashion designing, dancing,cooking,travelling...you can make great careers out of any of these if you have a passion for them. As far as medicine goes...even if you chose never to practise, you are so much more richer with the education and the educational process. Good luck.

You sound perfectly normal to me.

I have found that some people get degrees and go into an entirely different line of work.

So I would suggest that you try to relax and explore the possibilities. Take in interest inventory, talk to a vocational guidance counsellor, read about different vocations and just have fun doing it. Remember even if you do decide on medicine or whatever that doesn't mean you can not change your mind in a year or two. I'd start out with the basics first and keep learning about who you really are and what your passions are.

What do you love to do, I mean absolutely LOVE. What is your passion?

A wise person once said, 'find what you love, then find a way to make money doing it.' If you have a passion for helping people and science, then consider the doctor idea; if your passion lies elsewhere then find a career in that area.

I used to want to be a veterinarian, I love animals and I'm good at science, but I really wasn't passionate about it. Much to my parent's chagrine I began a long process of discovering what I could be passionate about for the rest of my life. I discovered that my heart is in helping troubled kids and teenagers, so I'm looking at going into either social work or family law. Its a far cry from vet work, but I'm very glad I didn't pigeonhole myself into a career that I would spend my whole life trying to force myself to love.

It would be impossible to tell you what topics are interesting, as we don't know what you are interested in.

If you need some help choosing a career path, try narrowing it down slowly.

Start by choosing several broad categories, such as:

Arts
Science
Law
Medicine

Then, write down as many jobs as you can for each one. Circle all the ones that seem interesting to you. Whichever catagory has the most circles could be an indication of what path to take.

Examples:

Arts>Journalist>Painter>Writer>photographer>etc
Science>Chemist>Pharmacist>Geologist>etc
Law>Laywer>Judge>Law Clerk>Court Reporter>Paralegal>etc
Medicine>Dr (MD)>Dr (DO)>Nurse>Physician's Asst>Vet>etc

It may or may not help you, but it helped me.

If you don't have, what my psych professor called - "the fire in the belly" then going into the "helping professions" is a HUGE mistake. If you don't want to be a doctor - DON"T BE. Take your GE courses first THEN let him know what you are going to major in. BTW if you haven't taken extra chemistry, botany, etc in High School then you are going to have SOME trouble with your college course load.

All the best.
