Why do the dept. stores put out winter clothes in the middle of July ----- and why are tank tops and shorts on the racks in January?

Does this make any sense to anyone out there?

It's 100 degrees, I don't want to shop for winter sweaters !

I know the stores have there reasons they give for it, But we are not shopping for the next yrear when we go to the store its for now purchases what ever their resons are then they need to keep the merchandise in the back until the season is there. I have gone to buy things that I wanted or needed and its all gone, sometimes Ive had to run all over looking for a little swimming pool or an umbrella, a pair of shorts. They need to STOP IT.

It has to do with inventory and competition. At first, stores got their inventory in early (but not obscenely early) because they had to have sufficient time to clear the summer clothes, for example, out before they had the space to store and display the winter clothes. This lead to summer clothes going on sale in spring, fall clothes in summer, etc. However, increasing competition amongst stores has resulted in stores wanting to have things in "first" to maximise purchases by customers that pay full price for stuff. IT also gets things "on sale" faster to maximise purchases by the bargain hunters. Now it has just gotten ridiculous.

the reason is they start putting out clothes early so you have to get there before spring hits just to get summer clothes. i used to work at a department store and there seasons start extrememly early. so if you want shorts i suggest you start shopping around march or april.

Yep. I'm too fat so therefore I wear my summer clothes for winter because I have a lot of insulation to keep me warm. That's the advantage of being big boned.

The law of supply and demand. And also, there are specials for these clothing items on their off season.

the same reason that christmas decorations are out right after labor day...they think that whatever a consumer wants, they may just buy from them...and the sooner you see it and recognize it as something you want...the sooner you will buy it...hopefully, from the store you see it in...
it IS ridiculous, but, that is retail for you!

Just look at it this way.. if they keep putting things out earlier and earlier, eventually it will cycle around and everything will be out when it should be. :)
