it's a 1992 there was no fire to the plugs or coil so we replaced the coil and that didn't do it. The distributor cap had been taken off. We're just trying to trouble shoot and find out why it won't turn all the way over, it acts like it wants to but doesn't

spark plugs have been replaced, almost everything under the hood has been replaced, that's why we think it may be the timing, but still not sure if that's it and if it is it we need to know the proper way to fix the timing. This is everything I know so far.

I read your other question about no fire to plugs.
It's HIGHLY doubtfull that your timing is off. Unless someone turned, or removed the distributor.

If you are not getting spark at all, it's more than likely you have a bad ignition module mounted to the advance plate with two screws under the rotor, which is inside/ under the distributor cap.

There is a flat connector plugged into one end of it.

Remove the screws, I think they're 5\16 or 1\4". Then unplug it.

It is common for these to go bad. they've gone out on my Chevy truck as well.

Your local auto parts store can test it for you. and probably have it in stock.

After you have replaced it, there should be no reason to change anything else.

First you will need a timing light. Make sure engine is running at operating temperature. Disconnect the the spark advance wire, under the dash on the passenger side of vehicle, most likely a brown wire with a black stripe. Attach the battery leads of the timing light to the appropriate terminals (red is + and black is -). Attach the inductive pickup to the #1 spark plug wire. Squeeze the trigger and aim the strobe at the timing pointer and marks on the crankshaft pulley. If the timing is off, you will need to loosen the distributor clamp and rotate the distributor until the the timing mark is correctly aligned with the pointer. The correct setting should be listed on a label within the engine compartment. After timing is correctly set, tighten up distributor clamp.
