I've retired from the printing industry after 30 years and in my opinion, there is no such thing as a good graphic design company, anywhere.
The basic problem is that any good printer can produce original artwork for the production of anything from package labels to annual reports. With basic computer skills, you too can produce your artwork and take it to the production facility.
The niche the graphic designer fills is kind of like the way a talent agent gets in the middle between the actor and the casting director. Not much value added by his input, and often serves to increase the total cost much more than necessary.
Very often, they will design pieces that are unnecessarily costly to produce, only to make their charges seem reasonable by comparison. If you, the business owner knew that one little design element, like making some silly line 'bleed' off the edge of the paper, adds about 200% to the production cost, you might decide to let that silly line stop just short of the edge of the sheet.
Beware of tag lines like 'serving you for over 10 years'. Because next year you will have to go back to the designer to make it read '11 years'! (Try 'serving you since 1995')
If I knew more of what you were going to produce, I could give you some better advice. Even though I am on the west coast, I may be able to be of help. zzmac1@sbcglobal.net
