the senators have much more power concentrated in a small group so that they tend to pass laws that effect the entire country and not local muicipality's.MUCH of the budget is done in the house of reps and the senate then goes over it and returns portions for changes in order to pass the whole budget.THIS was ggod for creating some pork for the folk back home and until the line item veto worked well .THE senate may impeach and must advise and consent to all appointments by the president .
they have more power then the house of reps but do not concern them selves to often with legislative matters except for voting on new laws and bills and budgets.

There are two answers to this question.
1. Political. To get re-elected as many times as possible.
2. Governmental. See Section 1 of the Constitution and a number of Constitutional Amendments. Ideally, they work to pass laws that benefit their districts/states and the US as a whole.
In reality many of them are more interested in the Political rather than Governmental aspects of their jobs.
Each Senator is elected by the whole state.
Each Congress(wo)man is elected by a portion of the state. The number of Congress(wo)men a state has is determined by a census taken every 10 years (2000, 2010, etc). States such as California have many districts. Smaller population states might have only one or two districts.

The both vote on laws. Pretty much the same. The senate only has 100 members so senators get paid more. It also requires a lot more intense negiotations than the House of Representatives.
