My friend was robbed in Egypt. His mobile was stolen. The mobile company blocked not only the simcard, but was also able to block a handset. Does it mean that you can track a handset with a simcard taken out?
Also, he was told by a friend that as long as your simcard is in and your mobile is switched on, lying within its microphone range, you can overhear the conversation nearby. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Of course you would need a special permission, blah blah - but technically - is it possible?

Each phone has an Electronic Serial Number (ESN) or an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) which is a unique serial number that identifies the physical phone. To "block a phone" as well as a sim card would basically entail blacklisting that serial number. Unless there is a shared database among companies, this would be effective by that carrier only.
As far as listening to conversations it seems highly unlikely and here is why:
When you check the technical specifications of any wireless phone you will find ratings for standby time and a much lower time for talk time. Why is this? It takes considerably more power from the phone to transmit data/voice than it does to simply maintain contact with the nearest tower and wait for a call. If it were feasible for the technology to allow someone to listen to you when you did not have an active call you would certainly lose the charge on your phone very quickly.
Most newer phones do have (nd eventually all new cell phones will have) Global Positioning System (GPS) in the circuitry. If the phone is powered on the company does have the technology to find you. Due to the resources necesssary and privacy issues this is a capability normally only used by Enhanced 911 service.

a new generation phone can be traced even without a sim card ,provided it is turned on. but you cannot hear the conversations unless its in calling mode.
