Hi. I am a fellow player. First off, if you don't already have one, invest in an electronic tuner, or at least a set of pitch pipes. It will enable you to tune accurately every time, and educate your ear as to how a properly tuned guitar should sound.

As far as the "rattling"...that's not due to improper tuning...it's the way you are trying to finger the chords. When you are making the chord, arch your fingers so that you are not hitting any adjacent string. Place your thumb against the back of the neck, and press each string firmly against the fret board. If you are making the chord properly, all 6 strings will ring clearly with no dull thump or buzzing sound. Take a look at your chord book, make sure you have it right, and try again.

A good way to learn proper chord technique is to play the chord, take your hand off the fretboard, make the chord again, and keep repeating it until it plays cleanly each time. Then move to a different chord and do the same thing. The secret is to get it down cleanly and consistently before moving on to the next chord.
I know that with new guitarists, they want to get good really quick, and tend to want to rush through the boring and repetitive parts, like chord practice...but this is one of the most important things when learning to play. Do it right, then move on...otherwise you will make sloppy chords, and thus be a sloppy player.

Hope this helped.
