Because America was discovered by Columbus sailing westward so, according to Europeans, we were to the west therefor we were put on the left.

I think because people in this country read from left to right, and therefore the natural starting point for us to look at a map of those continents, would be from America first, on the left.

That is just the standard way that American map publishers have decided to do it, in other countries they have other standards, in fact there are some places that you can buy maps with the direction "South" at the top of the map.

This type of map uses the Greenwich meridian as the center so of course the Americas are to the left.

Its not. There are plenty of maps here in Australia that show Australia as being in the Centre of the map.

Its worth noting that in the tradition view that you mention, if you draw diagonal lines from corner to corner where do the lines cross?

that's only the mercator projection of the world map. if you type into any search engine "alternate map projections" you will come up with some interesting views of the world. The mercator projection shows the US much much larger than it actually is, proving once again how US-centric this ridiculous world is.
