I have been here for 6 months and have applied to live here. I think the Danes are wonderful people and one can get by with English very well - especially in the Copenhagen and surrounding area. All the children have to learn danish, english and german in the schools and the thing I have had to remember is not to speak American slang and speak slow because most people are out of practice with their english.
I would suggest taking a canal tour of Copenhagen, visiting the National History Museum near Tivioli and sampling the coffee and pastries.
As a general rule Danes are very nice and helpful with the train scheduals, directions and general advice on staying out of trouble. There are youth hostels, public baths at the main train station and camping all over.
The islands are very nice and the weather is a bit hot now but I am told this is rather unusual.
A bit of practical advise is to stay away from Christiania because of the crime rate, put your wallet in your front pocket and be aware of your surroundings. Copenhagen is a safe place to visit but some criminals target tourists and it is better to be safe than sorry. I also recommend going to Sweden because it is so very pretty there and just across the bridge from Copenhagen is Malmo. If you want you can take the bus or train into Germany as well. I have not found a place in Denmark I don't like and I especially like Roskilde and it's worth visiting since the royal family is buried in the Roskilde Catherdral. Admission is very cheap and in some instances it is free to some very good museums.
The people are very nice and the food is great. The best thing to do is to make friends with the natives and get advise about where to go and what to see when you are here. Most people are reserved but once you get them talking they are very helpful.
Check out tourist sites on the internet regarding Denmark.
Have a great stay because most people I know who have moved here from America and other EU countries don't want to ever leave.

Yes, Denmark is wonderful. Copenhagen is beautiful, especially in Spring and Summer, but there are many other lovely cities in the country (Odense, for instance, hometown of Hans Christian Andersen). Danes are quite friendly, too. You'll have a wonderful stay.

Oh! Yes... I had been there 8 years ago...
I like it... I would say it is a very "quite" city in Copenhagen... I mean not many people roaming the street at night...U feel like U own the street...
U can visit the Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen...
I could not advise U to visit the mermaid status... Because it really very disappointed place I visit so far...
