Each side, white and black, have 16 pieces for a total of 32 pieces before any are removed during the game. Coincidently there are 32 teeth in a human mouth, 16 upper and 16 lower. Some high line sets have an extra set of queens to facilitate pawn promotion in the latter stages, There are variants of chess with more pieces. There are more instructional books published on chess than all other sports combined. So you should have no problem expanding your chess knowledge. There are a number of know it alls in the chess world so I'll be brief to not add to their numbers.

1 Queen

Well 32 in a regular game of chess but I don't just battle I RAGE WAR. I have a board with two extra rows on each side and we play with 4 players...sometimes by teams and other times its every player for themselves its a good twist and a fun variation but this requires 64 pieces. Usually black, white, silver and gold. But the board is still just two colors.

To be technical: Many chess scholars don't call pawns "pieces", but just call them pawns. So this would mean a complete set would have 16 pawns and 16 pieces. Queens and rooks are referred to as "major pieces", and bishops and knights are "minor pieces".
