We do not know for sure if a comet has actually struck our planet. It is more likely that some of the smaller asteroids may have done so. Comets are relatively small, while some of the asteroids are much larger. Icarus is about the size of New York City, and has passed within 500,000 miles of the earth. While that does not sound too close, the fact is that the earth's gravitational pull could draw something that size closer to the earth.
If I were going to bet on it, I would say that one of the asteroids, if it passes within 50,000 miles of the earth, might be drawn in and impact the earth. But that is conjecture, and the orbits of asteroids are very erratic and almost impossible to predict. And that could happen at almost any time. Does that mean the earth is in imminent danger? Probably not; the asteroids have been passing our planet for millions of years, and the earth is still here.

There is a 'slim' chance that a newly discovered asteroid -- 2003 QQ47 -- may hit Earth on March 21, 2014, British astronomers have said.
2003 QQ47 has a mass of around 2.6 billion tonnes and is 1.2 kilometres wide.
If the asteroid hits our planet, the impact would unleash force of 350,000 megatonnes, which is around eight million times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. On impact it would be travelling at 75,000 miles an hour.
The astronomers, who use the Torino scale to rate the chances of newly discovered asteroids and comets hitting the earth, classify the chances of the asteroid hitting the earth as 'an event meriting careful monitoring'.
But they are quick to point out the probability of such a collision was just one in 909,000.
The asteroid is around one-tenth of the size of the meteor that is believed to have wiped out dinosaurs on Earth 65 million years ago, said Kevin Yates, project manager of the near-Earth object information centre in Leicestershire central England.
"As additional observations are made over the coming months, and the uncertainties decrease, asteroid 2003 QQ47 is likely to drop down the Torino scale," Yates added.
Once again, the planet can breathe a sigh of relief. After making further observations of asteroid 2003 QQ47, astronomers now say there is no threat from this rock. It has been downgraded to a zero (0) on the Torin scale, which says, "The likelihood of a collision is zero, or well below the chance that a random object of the same size will strike the Earth within the next few decades. This designation also applies to any small object that, in the event of a collision, is unlikely to reach the Earth's surface intact."
While this particular asteroid appears to not be a threat to Earth at this time, the Near Earth Object Program and other agencies continue to monitor space for other threats. After all, it is a big universe, and there are a lot of asteroids and comets out there.

There are possibly 1500 earth crossing asteroids. Comets are rarer.
Close approaches are pretty difficult to predict. We don't know when the next one is going to hit.
