individuality is still here, its just hidden and shunned by the mass of ppl who believe being normal is being the same, like the sheep who follow the leader, its such a pity they dont see that they r the strange ones, its normal in my eyes to be an individual, my stubborness showed thru at school when i refused to wear the same uniform as the other girls...so bein suspended didnt work, so i compromised and was allowed to design my own uniform, but had to use the same fabric as the school used ....i started a trend yes, but i still claimed my individuality and stuck to it...lol...im a quiet country gal who shy's away from the public, but when im seen im always seen as ME... no 1 else even comes a close second....lol...im unique, and proud of it... tc : )

I guess that depends on your idea of being and individual. Most people are forced into conforming. If it's out of the norm, you are looked apon as a freak. There are still individuals out there, who don't care about the opinions and "ideal" beliefs of others and forge there own paths. More and more things in this day and age are becoming socially unacceptable. There are also the posers out there, who live there life from one fad to the next, always pretending to be someone they aren't. I believe individuality isn't really gone, it's just hiding in some of us. At least until we can decide to take our own lives into our own hands.

Most people confuse individuality with nonconformity, and end up just doing the opposite of what mainstream society does, which creates another mainstream. Besides, with so many people in the world, odds are good that someone else has some of the same ideas you do. You cant be different all of the time, nor would you want to.

In the 60's in one of my classes, there was a guy that had a crew cut. All the other guys had shaggy surfer cut hair. One of the guys asked the crew cut guy, "Why don't you let your hair grow out and be a non-conformist like the rest of us?" Individuality is a short lived commodity. Someone sees it, likes it, copies it and the rest of the sheep follow. That's why there are so many Britney Spears clones at the mall. Why the guys look like they just left an Eminem set.

I think many people are afraid to be individuals, scared that if they don't conform to society's ideals, they will not be accepted. It's very sad and I hope one day people will start to realise that they don't want to be another clone. People should be who they want to be, without feeling restricted or under pressure. We should all just be our own unique selves. Take care : )

Western society does not promote individuality. It just pretends to. Look what happens to people who don't fit in, we are allowed to be individuals as long as we conform to what is expected of us.

did it go? I would say individuality is growing constantly. Industrialisation increases social integration. and if the society is disintegrated individuality grows.

Unfortunately, it is gone. It used to be nice to be your own person, dress the way you want, pursue hobbies that you wanted and not be criticized for it. I guess I liked that era because I do my own thing and don't care about blending in.
