I would recommend the company of the car. ie, if it is mazda. go to mazda.com. or any other car site. i would also recommend kellybluebook.com a site that tells about the cars as well.

The dealership service dept. They will help you because they know that you might bring your car to them for servicing at some point.

the vin number will tell you a lot, where built, which major options like engine, trans and suspension, and the parts department at your dealer should be able to decode it for you..
