Living in a 70s built semi and the walls are made of paper (or so it seems). What can you do to soundproof the walls, who are the companies that do it, and how much does it cost?

My neighbor practices his KIND of music a lot....it even came thru the ground by our basement.
Now, I am a musician so I know the feeling....LOL...we love our music.

Other neighbors complained so I went and talked w/him. They can gossip, but not do anything!

The next week he soundproofed the room in his basement for us.......yeah, sometimes we get a hint of sound, but not like it is annoying now.

GOOD neighbor.........even tho he "acted like" he was annoyed, I was sweet and they are nice neighbors.

On the other hand, if this does not work???? plant a barrier.........

I know this will sound like a smarty-pants answer, but I assure you its not. The cheapest most affordable sound proofing is to do the two step program.

(1) Call or visit the neighbor and politely ask they hold down the noise. If neighbor gets snooty - or says he will and doesn't, then don't visit again and follow step 2

(2) Call the police as often as it takes. It's their job to keep the peace.

Fix battens to the wall to make fixing points for another layer of plaster board. Buy thick rockwool insulation and fix between the battens and cover all the surface if possible. Then fix to the battens another layer of plaster board. The distance between original wall and the new plaster board should be as wide as possible and the gap packed as tightly as possible with the rockwool. Seal the wall top and bottom with a rubber seal if you can. Glazing rubber could be an answer. This will not eliminate the sound transfer completely by will reduce it more acceptable levels.

ask them if they can keep down the noise. if not maybe you can get a fence/barrier that will absorb most of the noise.

When you are deaf to the sounds, they would not be there anymore. Try it, it works.
