Specifically, the question is about if you would (physically) save a stranger's life in a dangerous area that could jeopardize your own life; such examples include in a middle of a storm, on a sinking ship, or etc.? [Making a phonecall to rescue services is excluded.]

Well, a lot of people like to think they have an altruistic nature, and would do so in a heartbeat, but this really isn't the case. While I don't wish a disaster on anyone, if you happen to find yourself near one, look around. Most people will be standing around in shock, doing nothing. Or the "fight or flight" instinct will take over, and they will, most often, flee.

We all want to be heroes, but self-preservation plays a big role in holding us back.

Would I save a stranger? I'd like to think so, but I couldn't guarantee that I could. It depends on my body and mind's instincts at the moment. In reality? I have saved a life, but don't know that I could do so again. It is situational.

Yes, and, chances are, so would you. In such situations, most humans tend to come alive and respond with great passion to save a life, even if it endangers their own. Sociobiologically, I don't have it figured out, yet. But, speaking from my heart, I'm always delighted whenever I discover such a noble commonality among us humans.

Yes, definately!!! Try to think like this... If you are the one required saving, I bet the panic you experience will scare you shitless (sorry). Then OF COURSE I'll save him. God knows what my intentions are. He will count it on your Heaven's account, but that doesn't really matter. And of course yes yes. It's in the heartbeat of you. Then do you read the Bible? I want to be a Good Samaritan. I can honestly say I don't care what the consequences are as long as I save a guy(or girl) I see in desperate distress. God Bless You!! ^^

If there was an extremely good chance that I would die also, then no, because that would be foolish.

If I had a fairly good chance of saving them and getting out safely myself that yes I would do it.

Maybe. I would let my instincts take over and see what happens. It is hard to judge from my bed :) But I've always thought that if someone was drowining, I'd jump in.

If I knew that I could save him, sure.

If it would just kill us both, like if I didn't know how to swim and I saw someone drowning, I would try to seek an alternative.

Well - here we are - a REAL hypothetical, thinking person's thawt.

Seems to me that we all would like to think/feel that we are always prone to altruistic (heroic) behaviors, but . . .
unless/until we are confronted with an actual situation that tests our intellectual judgments,
WHO KNOWS???
