As one or several states of the Union ? Think about it... the British have had their time to be influential as a nation and it is over. They can either be dominated by the French and Germans in the EU... or it could come full circle with them joining the country which once left theirs. Think about it:

- No more obsolete monarchy which does nothing anyway and smacks of discrimination(a Catholic can never ascend the British throne).
- No more forced metric measurements. You can drink a PINT of beer again, instead of 400 mL. Shouldn't the English use ENGLISH measurements, not ones the French made up ?
- You could once again be part of the most powerful ENGLISH speaking nation. And a British state as part of the US would be the most powerful state able to wield REAL power in US and world affairs.

Britain is as influential as ever, they are as idependent from the EU as possible, they did not adopt the European single currency, the Euro, and if anything Europe is subservient to the UK. I respect them for being a member of the EU while at the same time retaining much of their unique political identity. The UK is certainly not "dominated by the French and Germans", saying that is plainly ridiculous. But with so much 'francophobia' in America these days, I can understand your ignorance.

Of course a monarchy "smacks of discrimination", it's a monarchy! By its very definition it is an elite club dictated by blood and lineage, the ultimate in discrimination. Yes there is much debate as to the relevance of the British monarchy in contemporary society, but I can tell you this for sure, while Brits complain about them, they still line the avenues at every event the royal family officiates at. the British public are fascinated with them and the romance and pomp of the bygone age they represent. The royal family will not come to an end in our lifetime.

Where the hell did you get the idea that you can't get a pint? The standard measurement in a British public house is still the pint. They seem to use both imperial and metric measurements in Britain, however metric seems to be becoming the universal norm.

As to whether Americans speak english is another question entirely! Just joking! Or kidding as you Americans say!

And by the way I am not British. I am Irish just to clarify. Whilst I have nothing against Britain (as an Irish person you seem to be expected to hold a deep rooted anger against Britain for a myriad of historical reasons, a lot of which are based on just plain bigotry and outdated events we should move on from) I hate it when Ireland is presumed by foreigners to be part of Britain. Yes, Northern Ireland is, but that is a whole other argument.

But you are right in one sense, eventually the whole world shall be one nation and governed by one administration. And race shall be gone, and peace shall reign.

Yeah right.

Let's go back to 1776, for just a moment. Our forefathers fought like hell in many wars to become a sovereign nation (separate from English domination & persecution-& tyranny). One of our major reasons for separating from England was for Freedom of Religion (now inthroned in our Constitution). I cannot believe, in this day & age, that the monarchy in England still rules. They really keep you guys in line, don't they? I don't know much about the politics in England, but you do vote in Prime Ministers and such, am I right? I'm sure you're not the only 'civilian' who would like to see the monarchy overthrown. Unfortunately, it may take a civil war to do so. Or a Revolution, both of which the US has done. England can never become a state, as you suggest. It is a country. And part of Europe so it would probably alienate you from Europe and make you "sitting ducks" for war. It could never happen. Maybe you could come to the US and check us out? You would see democracy at it's finest when the Congressional elections take place in November. Contact me through this Q & A--I'd like to know if you believe in the Downing Street Memo?

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that the Americans like the British. That simply isn't true; Americans do not, by and large, like Britain or the British (it may have something to do with that whole Revolutionary War thing).

No.

We don't need people who drink warm beer, ship goods in a lorry, go to the top of buildings in a lift and consider bangers & mash a wonderful meal.

We're two peoples separated by a common language (not sure who said it first).

Other than that, the Brits are great and I'm glad that they are usually on our side.

I dont think it would happen. little differences in the language, like how americans say "eraser" and the british say "rubber" or "sneaker" and "trainer" will probably cause a civil war since the people will get so annoyed with each other...lol
