HI I to am a joiner and agree strongly with George H's answer.
Over time the spongy feeling will wear away the locking mechanism the boards use to stay together if you use the carpet underlay.
underlay for wooden floors can cost as little as £1 per m2

High traffic areas really should be wood, laminate, or tile. Carpet will just look aweful in those areas after a short period of time. Especially with children. If you already have the wood, leave it. Wood definitely brings more equity to the home. BUT...putting carpet over it does not ruin it. What can is if it gets wet, and the carpet padding gucks (technical term LOL) up onto the wood.

Yes you can use your old underlay but it will affect the durability of your wood flooring, your floor will become spongy.,.,so better is to use wood flooring underlay . it will be worthy and provide you quality wood flooring.

Don't do it, Ed. The resulting sponginess will make the floor feel unnatural and lessen the percieved value. Another fellow made a great point about joint seperation. I don't even like the thin underlayment that is typically used, preferring the glue-down method which helps create the illusion of a thick wood floor.
Skip the trampoline...you'll be much happier!

hi Ed, i am a joiner and have used underlay before. Personally i wouldn't recommend it as it is to thick and will cause your laminate flooring to open at the joints because there is to much movement.

no you cannot use existing u/lay on laminate
what you need to use is a product called whisperwalk
this is an u/lay and also a sound reducer and is easily
obtained from most diy stores and is sold in packs of
3 sq mtrs there in tile format size approx 20"X20" and
are quite cheap.just go in and ask for sound pads
hope this helps.good luck . ps you can lay these from
any point in the room as u dont see them when fitted
