I am a heterosexual girl. Some of my friends use the word "gay" for a lot of things (when they are all hetero). Just a day ago one of them said, "My camera is being so GAY!"

I have told them that I don't appreciate this, since "gay" means happy and the correct term is homosexual, plus a camera can't be gay, and many other things, but my defense always seems weak. What can I say so that they don't blow me off?

People don't really use gay to mean happy anymore, that's gone with the gay men's choir. They still have the gay men's choir but now it's only for gay/homosexual men.

I think the fact that you said something to your friends about not using the word "gay" as a diss is great. That way they know that you don't use a whole group of people as an insult. (That was said on "Joan of Arcadia" to stop insults from being called a lesbian.) Keep telling them it's not nice and they could use a different word.

You could try to make them understand by saying something is so "straight" as a diss. Then they could see the shoe on the other foot. Or use the term "breeders" which I don't like either.

Plus being called homosexual isn't very everyday either, very science like. It's fine to say gay, lesbian, straight, or bi. Just use the words in a positive way.

First of all, good for you for acknowledging this. Second of all, I've been there as well. I have friends who in the past, used the word gay and f****t like you'd use the word "the". And I just simply corrected them each time, nicely, then I was just able to give them a "look" and they just knew, and now I've seen a real change. I know people don't mean to do it, but it can be offensive and just like you shouldn't go around calling things "retarded" either, using these terms in a negative way are also hurtful. I don't know why calling a camera "gay" became a normal part of speech, I was never brought up to use the word that way, but some parents allow it, so just keep that in mind; that your friends may only have you to help them!

Well, the best thing is to grab a M16 and blow them away while saying," How gay is this". Then kick them.

They're using the word 'gay' in place of words like 'duh', 'stupid', 'idiotic' or 'inane' (not 'insane' but 'inane'). Perhaps one way you could modify their use of that word is for you to begin using something unusual yourself to describe something or someone that doesn't work properly.

EXAMPLE:

We were going to the carnival and the 'doofus' car broke down. Evan got the jack out of the trunk and began working to replace the flat tire, when the 'idiot' jack slipped, almost trapping him under the car. What a 'bonehead' car he has! It's so 'duh'! I mean, he's had nothing but problems with it since he bought it from that 'lame' carlot back in April.

Good luck!

The same way you let someone know any other word offends you. Personally I can't stand hearing the F word when someone is using it in every other sentence. It makes them sound uneducated and I let them know just that.

I always ask my younger sister, "you mean it likes another boy?" Then the dialogue gets going and I can tell her that the movie is "gay" if it involves two boys or two girls liking each other.

you can try to keep telling them, but it usually won't work 100%.
they're used to it. it's like saying "stop using the word 'the'"
my friends say it all the time, and i being gay, am a bit offended, you know. but all they say is "sorry, nick."

but yeah.
just keep pointing it out, and chances are, they'll say it less.
but no guarantees.

Just tell them that you find it offensive - any friend worth having would make an effort not to say it after that.

Can you possibly come up with a more gay question?
