Wooden hammers can be made by hand as well as lathes and other machines these days.
It depends what kind of requirements you have; you want simple things or some design/fancy stuff, what kind of volumes are required, what kind of wood you want to use for making those handles etc. Machine made handles have standardization, volume and design easily when compared to hand made handles by traditional carpenters.

I just saw the handle off below the sledge head and drive the wedge, wood etc out from that end. It works slick as a whistle and since you are going to replace the handle anyway you haven't damaged the wedge trying to pry it out. Good luck.
