i would say a Nintendo DS - not too expensive - portable (keep him quite in long journeys - has a great range of games - fun - he can play a learning game to a fierce fighting game or even train up his own pet (having a pet is a 8-10 year old boys dream )

to be honest i think having an animal is a dream to any kid in my eyes - but thats quite expensive

You can get a Nintendo Dual-Screen for about £70 with loads of games and accesories second hand about £80-£90 brand new usually come with a game or 2

Don't know how much you want to spead - I've just bought a 9 year old a Quantum Flyer from Hawkins Bazaar. Do have a look at their website. It helps if you have some idea of what the kid likes. I've also included a book on magic tricks and a ball full of body parts. Gross.

First of all get your son to write down a list of all the toys and games that he might think that he wants, then you at the same time you your'e self write a list. And then see what both of you son come up with. I myself have a 10yr old son from my personal experance you make the effort to get games and activities both you and your son can do together. Forget about toy guns or pc games get things that activate thier minds like model plane, cars, boats in which you your self can sit down with him. Board game that are fun and educational. Or may be get him out in the great outdoors by buying him afishing rod. I have bought my son 2 rods and we do a fair bit of fahter and son fishing trips together and if you start now you will be able to spend of alot of father and son time together and that is always the best present any son can have is the time that he spends with his father. Because you only get one shot at it.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Xbox & Playstation 2's are highly favourable with 8-10 year olds, my cousin was pretty impressed with these, however they aren't cheap.

Skate boards, baseballs, baseball bats, basketballs, in-line skates, action figures, remote controlled cars, remote controlled airplanes, remote controlled boats, model kits & board games.

I wouldn't recommend video games because it is unhealthy staring at a video screen mashing buttons till they get tired. Also along with watching t.v and video games children tend to eat junk food while doing so.

Fishing rods.(If you near a place to fish). Outdoor games or sporty stuff ( if they're interested in any sport.) Better than playing video games and not being active.
