School uniform on one hand shows a school as a community, it shows that there cannot be a bias towards different clothes.
For example: If one child has the new designer jeans and the other childs clothes are not designer, they will get teased for not having designer clothing.

On the other hand, school uniforms can be sexist. I know myself that several schools in our area have boys wearing trousers and girls wearing skirts. I know for certain that I would definitely not like to wear a skirt to school but it is school uniform regulations in many schools that girls have to wear skirts.

So overall I believe that there should be a placement that there is school uniform but there is also an option of what to wear.
For example: Skirts and trousers for girls or long sleeve or short sleeved shirts.

I don't know, I'm not yet certain how I feel about uniforms, let alone how casual they should be.

I realize we are discussing something different than the German Youth under Adolf Hitler, but I must ask just how different? Sure the Youth all had tan uniforms and marched where they went. But is it significant what the uniform looks like or is it significant that uniforms are incorporated at all?

I'm sorry, this doesn't really answer your question, but maybe it will give you some food for thought.

It really depends on one's views of what "formal" and "casual" mean. I went to a school with uniforms, and we had plenty of options...we had pants, shorts, skorts, jumpers, skirts...and three different shirts. And they were "casual" in the sense that girls didn't have to wear ties...but "formal" in the sense that all of the shirts were scratchy & uncomfortable as opposed to cotton t-shirts or polo shirts. And no matter what...shirts had to be tucked in.

If you're asking how students/teachers feel about how uniforms supposedly "benefit" everyone...such as cut down on bullying, improve grades and whatnot...that's a different question. (I don't think they do).
