search all program menu
look for audio app's or the icon like the one you had in the tray
also look in the start up folder the icon might be in there
some times the icon will come back after a reboot

The little blue icon (with a play sign on it?) can be restored this way. Go to Start Menu -> Control Panel -> SoundMax Audio (or similar device with Audio in its name). In its settings try to find an option that says something like "Show in System Tray"

Sounds like you changed an equalizer setting on your sound effect control by mistake - hope you can sort it out. Follow above advice and you should be ok.
