I for one do not hear my baby at night, it may be because he doesn`t cry he just make wimpering noises.

Or maybe its because I`m deaf

I can't speak for any men except my husband. I breast fed my kids so he was a bit useless if the baby needed feeding. But, he truly wanted to have the full "new dad" experience. This is how he helped me and probably saved my sanity. When he'd get home from work, he insisted that I take a break...I would take a walk, run to the store, or just sit in the bathroom by myself. If I had a particularly frustrating day, he'd do baby call that night. I'd sleep in a separate bed with the door shut and he'd sleep in the baby's room. Whenever the baby woke, he'd cuddle, change the diaper and try to get him back to sleep. If the baby needed feeding, he'd bring the baby to me. After I fed the baby, my hubby would take the baby back to bed. I am fortunate that not only is he a great husband...he is an awesome dad.

Of course they hear the babies, they are just better at pretending that they don't care. Perhaps if women didn't then jump up to take care of what needs to be taken care of more men would get around to sharing in the responsibility. Alternatively, instead of addressing this issue while the baby is crying, perhaps the couple could have a conversation about it during the day and come up with a shared approach to childrearing.

By the way, not all men are like this. There are men out there who take equal responsibility, not to mention men who probably do more of the work themselves.

That is so funny. My husband does the same thing! I have a 6 week old and for the last 6 weeks I either get up and feed the baby or I have to shake like h*ll to get him out of bed. I hear that mothers have a sleep schedule like their babies and have more of an "ear" to their babies cries. But I think its partially them knowing that you'll hear and they don't have to worry about it! Good Luck! and remember shake like h*ll.... you need a break!

My hubby claims he doesn't hear. I swear I wake up a minute before she starts crying and know that she is about to cry. I think we have a stronger sense when it comes to our little ones. We were together for 9 months!! But yes, my hubby is deaf haha

My husband tended to have selective hearing when our boys were young and still required middle-of-the-night bottles. I think some of the time, he really DID sleep through it, but sometimes, he would pretend to be asleep. If I KNEW he was playing possum and it was his turn to get up, I found that a quick, sharp jab to the ribs worked wonders. :)

The former, unless they actually have a hearing disability.

Most humans have the amazing ability to tune out what they don't like to hear. This ranges from loud blaring idealogies to little annoying yips the neighbour's puppies make.

Taking care of babies is never easy but all the best.

LOL yes they are. I remember when my baby was about two weeks old she got up in the night and was crying and crying. I had nursed her to sleep then got up to use the bathroom. I was still in a lot of pain from my c-section and I was particularly exhausted that night. My boyfriend didn't have to get up early or anything so I thought he would help me. She started wailing when I was in the bathroom and when I came back to the bedroom he was holding her and said "I think she needs her diaper changed".

It's funny now but I wanted to smack him when he said that LOL.

No not all husbands "play" deaf....only the ones that aren't good fathers and husbands. It took two to make the baby and it takes two to care for and love the baby.

they pretend sweetie ... and they do it well. my husband is crazy about our 7 month old daughter, but god forbid she cries at night, then its only mommy who can hear/help her. In order to encourage my husband to help, I used to express milk and bottle it ... thinking that he too will get an opportunity to bond, what a waste! I should have saved my nipples and junked the breast pump... even now that I exclusively use formula ... there's no help coming forth. all the best ... you are pretty much on your own.
