I have unplugged the heater and tried adding colder water but it soon warms up again. One fish has died, which could be coincidence. It's been this warm for a week or so and isn't looking like cooling down anytime soon. Can the fish live in these conditions ok?

It depends on the varieties you have. They may be 'tropical' fish but in the wild they may be able to find cooler places. Make sure that your oxygenator is working well and cover the sides of the tank with wet towels. You might also try ice cubes (but not too many at once or they may die of shock from a sudden temperature drop).

I think you need not worry, though:
"The ideal temperature for most freshwater tropical fish is be between 76 and 80 degrees F." (24 to 26 C)

Best temperature should be around 23C. U might not need to buy any equipments to cool the fish down. Don't waste ur money! Just find a cool place at home for the fish. Or Take card boards & other non-toxic, not harmful material to shade the fish. DOn't put the fish tank under the sun unless it's winter. Or U can change water for the fish frequently every 2 days. Put cool water inside the tank>
Never put icicles U found in the freezer into the fish tank. It doesn't work, & U are damaging the habitat, 'coz ice contains germs.

I have this problem all the time. Take some pop bottles and fill them with water. Put them in the freezer and once they are frozen float them in the tank and when it melts put it back in the freezer. It will cool the tank down reasonably fast.

The most likely cause of the death of your fish was adding cold water!

Fish can tolerate surprisingly high and low temperatures and survive. What they cannot cope with is rapid temperature change.

try shielding the tank with one of the reflectors you get for cars to help reflect sun and heat.
Lower the temperature remove water and top up to keep at normal temp has the pet shop not got a cooling system.

24 degrees celcius is about good temperature but get a tropical fish handbook from petshop.

no they won't.the best thing to do is buy a chiller and use it in conjunction wtih your heater.it will take some calibration to get it right but it will pay off.chillers are quite expensive though.do you have a way to use an airconditioner in the same room as your tank, if so; try that.
