I love horror movies and I prefer to stick to the classics. The silent version of Nosferatu really creeps me out, so it's my favorite. There's just something so inhuman about Max Schrek.
I think Asian horror movies are much scarier than American movies these days. The remake of The Ring was a joke, but the original, Ringu, was pretty scary and the back story was a lot better. (Plus you don't have to tolerate Naomi Watts, who is just the poor man's Nicole Kidman and they both annoy me.)
I do think, however, that both the original and remake of The Grudge were two of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time, though the original is better. I think the remake holds up to the original because they had the same director, so it really preserved the atmosphere and imagery of the original.
My all-time favorite Asian horror movie is Uzumaki. It's unlike any film I've ever seen. There's a lot of visually stunning sequences. You'll never look at a spiral the same way again. The last time I saw it was about a year ago, but I can still remember it vividly. It's a film version of a Manga, but I haven't read it so I can't say whether it's a good interpretation or not. It does have a real comic book feel to it though in the colors and framings, which I think just adds to the surrealism of the film. It's one of those movies that you can watch multiple times and always see something new.

I guess Alien has to be up there with the scariest horror films very claustrophobic and tense with quite a few jump out of your skin moments. Salems Lot ( the David Soul one ) specificaly for the scene where the newly risen Danny Glick is seen floating outside Mark Petries bedroom window and starts scratchng at the glass to be let in, that really gave me the creeps. Finally Hammer films The Reptile probably seems a bit risable now but it gave me nightmares when I first saw it at the age of 7. The idea of a girl being cursed and turning into a snake creature still creeps me out.

I love horror films but the one film that really f***** me up is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original). The japanese Ring is so scary I could barely watch it!
Some classics are-
Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
Night Of The Living Dead
Dawn Of The Dead (original)
Dawn Of The Dead (remake)
Day Of The Dead
Alien
Creeping Flesh
The House That Dripped Blood
The Blair Witch Project
Nosferatu

House on Haunted Hill really freaked me out but if you're getting bored of cheesy American films with no plot then you should try some of the Asian Horrors.
The Eye - really creepy and a good story line.
A Tale of Two Sister's - Korean and again it's creepy but they story is amazing.
The original Japanese Ring series is also really scary - more so than the American version.

No matter what other people say, The Blair Witch Project is the best horror movie (if it is really a movie) I've ever seen. It scared the crap out of me when I first watched, and when I watched for the second time, and for the third...There is no blood, no witch. They do the worst thing they can do to scare you: LET ALL TO YOUR IMAGINATION. If you have already watched it, tell me what did you think about it. If you'll get to watch it, let me know.

Try the original texas chainsaw massacre or the new one the last two minutes are really scary because they show actual footage of two people who went to check out the crime scene getting killed. Just watch, you will see what I mean.
