Western Europe is not really cold at least until january. I mean: United Kingdom, the Netherlands (where I live), Belgium, France, Germany. Of course it depends what you would call really cold, but at least it is seldom freezing in autumn until Christmas. A white Christmas is something we only see about once in ten years. Usually it is too warm. All because of the Warm Gulf Stream coming from the tropics - the same that goes via the north pole along the east coast of America that makes America so cold in the winter. Imagine, Portugal is at the same height as New York, while it only snows once in ten year or so, that includes the winter.
You have to wear a coat though for western Europe in the autumn and later. Not really for the cold - a big sweater would do, but more because of the rain. Not falling the whole day through though.
Southern Europe: Portugal, Spain, Italy Greece remains quite warm until late in the autumn. We usually go camping in Italy at end october. Also French wine grapes are picked until end october, so it can't be really cold by then.

Hi odd,

I generally travel in Europe once in Winter and then in the Spring. It will be very cold during your time in Europe, maybe a little less mild in October. There is a chart below with average temps for many European cities. Train travel in Europe is generally a good value, but it all depends on your comfort levels. Most cities too have excellent public transportation.

With temps as low as -40 C in the winter, one of the coldest but most awesome places you can travel to the Swedish Lapland village of Jukkasjärvi 100 km inside the Arctic circle. There is an ICE HOTEL where the temps in the rooms can be about -4 but you are comfy with the warm sleeping bags they provide and you can get a drink at the vodka ice bar if needed. You will also experience reindeer herds and travel by dogsleds and snowmobiles. Traveling during the off-peak periods (between September and Christmas) is generally cheaper.
