It doesn't take much. In the wild, people studying chimps have seen them breaking off twigs to create a tool for extracting termites from a termite hill (to eat). One such tool-making chimp had a baby, and that youngster learned to make the same kind of tool by observation.

So I would say the invention of technology started before chimps and the earliest humans went their separate ways. By the stone age, man was a master of all sorts of technologies. They were great stone workers, weapon makers, weavers, cooks, clothing makers, and even surgeons and bone setters.
